Perched high on Cleopatra Hill in the old mining town of Jerome, Arizona, The Haunted Hamburger has become one of the most recognized restaurants in the state—not just for its food, but for its history and the strange events reported inside its walls.

A Historic Building with a Past
Before it became a restaurant, the building that now houses The Haunted Hamburger was a boarding house dating back to Jerome’s mining days. Like much of the town, it sat empty for years after the mines closed and Jerome’s population fell.
In the 1990s, new owners began restoring the structure to open a family restaurant. That’s when the unexplained activity started.
The Incidents During Renovation
According to the owners’ official account on thehauntedhamburger.com, several odd things occurred during renovation:
Tools, especially hammers, went missing and later reappeared in strange places.
Doors slammed unexpectedly, even when no wind was present.
Hot water faucets turned on by themselves.
Unexplained smells were detected in the stairwell area.
A previous owner reportedly told them that the building was known for “ghostly mischief,” particularly involving tools, and suggested that the spirits seemed to have a special interest in hammers.
Naming the Restaurant
After weeks of strange events, the new owners decided to embrace the stories instead of ignoring them. They named their new business The Haunted Hamburger, a nod to the building’s haunted reputation and the odd experiences that had surrounded its renovation.
Reports Since Opening
Since the restaurant opened, guests and employees have occasionally reported minor unexplained occurrences—sounds, movements, and the general feeling of not being alone—though no major paranormal investigation has been publicly documented.
Despite its name, The Haunted Hamburger is first and foremost a popular dining spot, known for its hillside view, hearty food, and connection to Jerome’s larger history as one of Arizona’s most haunted towns.
