Arizona's Ghost of the Water

As the sun disappears behind the pines surrounding Fool Hollow Lake, the shoreline grows quiet. Campfires crackle. Fishing boats return to the docks. And according to local legend, that's when she appears.

Dressed entirely in blue, a lone woman is said to glide silently along the edge of the water before vanishing into the darkness.

No one seems to know exactly who she is.

A Town Beneath the Lake

Long before Fool Hollow Lake became one of Arizona's most popular recreation areas, a small settlement known as Adair occupied the hollow. Founded by Mormon pioneer Thomas Jefferson Adair in the late 1800s, the community struggled against poor soil, harsh winters, disease, and isolation before eventually being abandoned. Years later, the valley was flooded to create the lake we know today.

Many believe the old homes, foundations, and forgotten memories still rest beneath the water. Whether that has anything to do with the legend...no one knows.

The Woman in Blue

Visitors have reported seeing a woman dressed in a flowing blue gown standing near the shoreline late at night. Others claim she appears to hover just above the water before slowly fading into the darkness.

Witness descriptions are surprisingly consistent.

She wears a long blue dress.
She is usually seen alone.
She never speaks.
She disappears without warning.

Some campers have claimed they saw her from across the lake, only to find no footprints when they walked to where she had been standing. Others say they simply felt they weren't alone.

Who Is She?

Like most Arizona legends, there are several theories.

Some believe she was one of the early settlers whose life ended before the town was abandoned.

Others think she is forever searching for a loved one or perhaps for a home that now lies beneath more than twenty feet of water.

Another theory suggests she isn't searching for anything at all. She's simply there...repeating the same lonely walk night after night. No historical records have confirmed her identity and no explanation has ever been universally accepted. The Lady in Blue remains part of Fool Hollow's enduring local folklore, shared by residents, park visitors and storytellers alike.

Folklore or Something More?

Ghost stories often begin with a single witness. Legends survive because the stories continue. Whether the Lady in Blue is nothing more than campfire folklore, a trick of moonlight reflecting off the lake, or something that truly waits along the shoreline, one thing is certain:
