The Road Looks Normal—Until It Doesn't

Tucked away in eastern Arizona, just outside the copper-mining town of Morenci, there’s a stretch of U.S. Route 191that seems like any other desert highway—quiet, remote, and empty for miles. But talk to the truckers who frequent it, and you’ll hear whispers of something strange.

They call it "The Mile That Disappears."

What Happens on Route 191

Multiple long-haul drivers have reported eerily consistent glitches that occur only on this specific stretch of road:

  • GPS devices suddenly skip ahead exactly 1 mile

  • Vehicle clocks jump forward 8 minutes

  • CB radios and music cut out—then return without static

There’s no cell service out there. No radio towers. No unusual road signs. Just one long, dark piece of pavement that acts like time and space don't quite agree with it.

And no matter how many times it’s reported, no agency has ever launched an investigation. Why would they? Glitches are hard to prove.

A Ghost of the Devil’s Highway?

It’s worth noting that U.S. Route 191 is the spiritual successor to the infamous U.S. Route 666, a highway so drenched in superstition that it was renamed in 2003 due to frequent sign theft and public discomfort.

Coincidence?

Possibly. But we don’t deal in coincidences. We deal in cases.

Local Legends and Lost Minutes

One local rancher claims his dog refuses to cross that stretch of road. A former Forest Service worker says he once drove the route at dusk and doesn’t remember making it to Alpine—just that he parked 45 minutes later in front of a gas station he had no memory of passing.

We asked him if he still drives Route 191.He just said, “Not at night.”
